The Ford Fusion Hybrid was the 2010 North American Car of the Year, while the Ford Transit Connect was the 2010 North American Truck of the Year. The three car finalists beat out such contenders as the Audi A8, Buick Regal, Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Fiesta, Infiniti M37/56, Jaguar XJ, Kia Optima, Mazda 2, Nissan Juke, Volkswagen Jetta and Volvo S60. The three truck finalists beat out such contenders as the Ford Edge, Honda Odyssey, Hyundai Tucson, Infiniti QX56, Kia Sorento, Kia Sportage, Lincoln MKX, Mercedes-Benz R-Class, Porsche Cayenne, Toyota Sienna and Volkswagen Touareg.
Bipolar slate of finalists reflects a sea change in the auto industry, as jurors embraced alt-energy cars while still giving the nod to SUVs on the truck side. The Volt is a parallel series hybrid, the Leaf is all-electric and the Sonata finalist is made up of three models, including a hybrid that delivers 40 mpg on the highway. But even the SUV winners reflect the new fuel-conscious thinking in Detroit. The 2011 Explorer and Durango have moved away from traditional body-on-frame designs and have become crossovers. They are no longer truck-based. Detroit automakers had a strong showing, nabbing four out of the six finalist slots for 2011.
If the Sonata wins, it will be the second win for Korean automaker Hyundai. Its Genesis was the 2009 North American Car of the Year. If the Volt wins, it will be the fourth time GM will bring home the North American Car of the Year crown. If the Leaf wins, it will be the second win for Nissan; the Altima won in 2002.
